Get Something Different at Gourmet Express
9/9/09
Local chef Ryan Tucker wants to offer something different to residents who are tired of the same old thing for lunch. So he will open Gourmet To Go in Parsons, a restaurant featuring creative, healthy lunch fare that customers can pick up at the drive thru.
The restaurant will offer homemade soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps, all made with fresh ingredients.
Tucker’s mother, Melanie, and friend Jasmine Hunt are assisting him in his new venture.
“Ryan is a really good chef,” Melanie remarked.
The food at Gourmet Express will be served fast- food style rather than plate lunch style, Melanie says, allowing customers to get a quick but healthful lunch.
“We’re going to be serving some things that you wouldn’t expect to find in this area,” Tucker said. “We have a couple of things that really stand out,” he adds. One of his specialties is an Asian-style wrap made with sesame slaw and soy ginger marinated chicken on a whole wheat wrap.
Another wrap, called pork carnita, is made with seasoned, slow roasted pork, lettuce, black beans, and salsa verde made with green tomatillos.
Tucker says he has wanted to become a chef all his life. When he was five years old, he told his mother he wanted to open up a restaurant someday. “It’s been a lifelong dream,” he said. Tucker started cooking at home when he was 8, and by the time he was a teenager he was helping to cook Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners and soon took over making the entire meal himself.
After graduating from Riverside High School in 2002, Tucker began attending culinary school to learn how to be a professional chef. He studied at Sullivan University in Louisville, Kentucky and obtained degrees in both Culinary Arts and Hotel & Restaurant Management.
“It was just something I was born to do,” Tucker said. “I’ve never wanted to do anything else. I couldn’t even imagine anything else I would want to do.”
Tucker said it’s important to follow your dreams. “Do what you love and it won’t seem like work.”
Gourmet Expess is set to open on Monday, September 14. The restaurant will be open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Diners can pick up their lunch inside or use the convenient drive thru window. Free delivery will also be available to local businesses.
Gourmet Express is located on Tennessee Avenue North in Parsons in the former Three Men and a Pig building. For more information or to place your order, call 847-2866.
