Snow and Ice Cause Wrecks, Power Outages 2/4/10 Nearly half a foot of snow fell across Decatur County late last week during the second winter storm of the season. According to Parsonsweather.com, the Parsons area saw about 5 inches of snow on Friday. Late Friday evening, freezing rain and sleet blanketed the snow with a sheet of ice, making for treacherous driving conditions on roadways. According to Sgt. Brad Wilbanks of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, there were five accidents without injury and one accident with injuries reported in Decatur County. The THP also responded to six stranded motorists who requested assistance. Decatur County Schools were cancelled on Friday before the weather set in but continued icy conditions over the weekend caused school officials to cancel classes again on Monday and Tuesday. The UT Martin Parsons Center was closed Friday but back open for classes Monday morning. Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday remained at or near freezing, but climbed into the 40s on Monday. Ice accumulations in southern portions of the county resulted in power outages over the weekend for many customers. Lexington Electric System reports that about 3,000 customers were affected by downed power lines around southern parts of Decatur and Henderson Counties as well as northern Hardin County in the areas of Scotts Hill, Sardis and Saltillo. “Crews were out working through Friday night and into Saturday and Sunday to restore power to customers,” remarked LES Manager Matt Ujcich.
