Evans Pleads Guilty in Father’s Murder
by Jennifer Clendenion
2/4/10
Misty Evans was sentenced last week to spend a decade in prison for the murder of her father, William Neely Evans.
Evans pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on Tuesday. She was originally indicted on a charge of first degree murder for the slaying.
Neely Evans was found shot to death on March 28, 2009 at the family homestead on Evans Road near Parsons. Misty Evans was arrested a week later. Investigators found the murder weapon in the home she shared with her parents on Bear Creek Road.
Misty Evans’ mother, Jenita Evans, testified at a hearing in September that her husband was physically and verbally abusive toward the family and had threatened to kill them.
“Misty felt like she was saving lives,” Jenita Evans stated at the hearing. “Mine and everybody else in the family.”
Evans was sentenced to 10 years in prison and will be eligible for parole after serving 60 percent of the sentence. She had previously been free on a $200,000 bond but was taken into custody following sentencing. Evans is currently being housed at the Decatur County Detention Center until she can be transferred to one of the state’s women’s prisons, the Mark H. Luttrell Correctional Center in Memphis or the Tennessee Prison for Women in Nashville.
