Six Seek Republican Nomination For County Mayor
3/3/10
The Decatur County Republican Executive Committee met Friday in Parsons where six local residents announced their desire to run for County Mayor in the August election.
David Boroughs, Judy Tucsnak, Donald Dickson, Larry Tillman, Bob Newberry and Robert Myracle introduced themselves to the Committee, each offering reasons why they should be chosen as the Republican nominee.
David Boroughs has been a County Commissioner for 14 years and said he feels his longevity on the Commission has given him the experience needed for the County Mayor position. A lifelong resident of Decatur County, Boroughs said he’s been a Republican ever since he knew the difference in what the parties stood for.
Boroughs said he is pro life and pro gun. “I’m a very conservative person,” he remarked. “I believe in less government, low taxes. You can’t tax and spend your way into prosperity.”
Boroughs said elected offices belong to the people.
“Those of us that have been fortunate enough to be elected are public servants,” he said. “I believe in listening to the people.
“My philosophy is also that the money we spend is not my money, it belongs to the taxpayers. We need to do the very best job we can to spend the money in the most economically and fiscally responsible way we can.”
Bob Newberry is the current Director of the Joint Economic Community Development Board. He has lived in Decatur County since 1988. He has a background in business, having worked for much of his career at Kolpak, and has been responsible for budgets, operations, business plans and negotiating contracts, experiences he feels will help him in the position of County Mayor.
Newberry remarked that the key job of the County Mayor is being an educator and facilitator for the Commissioners.
“It’s the Mayor’s responsibility to gather complete and accurate information as to the subject at hand, present that information to Commissioners, give his input, [and] give options and alternatives. But at the end of the day, the Commission makes the final decision,” he said.
Current Riverside High School Principal Robert Myracle was born in Decatur County but moved to Lauderdale County to work as an educator, serving as an agricultural teacher and assistant principal before returning to RHS in 1992.
Myracle plans to retire after 10 years as Principal but would like to work in the county.
“I think I have a lot of things to offer,” Myracle remarked. “I think I can offer good management skills. I’m a good listener. I talk to people and know how to deal with people.”
“I think I can show some leadership,” he added.
Larry Tillman said he doesn’t have the “political pedigree” of some of the other candidates, “but I do bring to you many years of life experiences that I have faced that I feel have prepared me for this position,” he remarked. An entrepreneur, Tillman has also served on the board and building committee for his church.
“My heart is to want to do something positive for our community, for our county, for our country,” he said.
“I’ll work with you and the people of Decatur County to do what needs to be done in an honest way that would be pleasing to God to make this a better place to live,” Tillman added. “I promise you that I will be on the job, searching for ways to improve our economic status. I’ll do all I can to work and do what needs to be done to make this a better community.”
Judy Tucsnak says when she retired after 33 years of teaching last year she already knew she wanted to be County Mayor.
“We have a great need for somebody to step up to the plate and to try to do something for our county,” she remarked.
“I think my education and my experience will help me to be the best candidate I can be,” she said.
Tucsnak has a business administration degree from Union University and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from the University of Memphis. She spent six years as the President of the Teacher’s Association and was on the association board of directors for three years.
Tucsnak has spent the past four years on the County Commission and is the Chair of the budget committee.
“I studied the budget, learned how the money comes in, where the money goes,” she said. “I spent many hours that first year, looking over the budget, trying to figure out what it meant.”
Tucsnak said the county needs to find ways to bring in industry, jobs and tourism.
“We need to find some ways to market ourselves,” she said. “I know we have the kinds of places that we can get out and make ourselves known.”
Tucsnak said as a teacher, she learned to write grants to earn funds for her classroom. This experience, she said, could help the county find additional funding as well.
“We hear about grants, but we don’t see them around here,” she said.
Tucsnak also said as Mayor, she would work with citizens, voters, county employees and Commissioners to do everything she could to make Decatur County the best county around.
The final mayoral hopeful, Donald Dickson, said his lifelong experience in sales management and marketing will help him in the position of County Mayor.
“I know one thing that’s very important to this county,” he said. “That’s jobs.” He said as County Mayor, he would work hard to bring jobs and industry to Decatur County.
“We need someone in the office of County Mayor that knows how to hustle…how to go to the right people and find what we need, and bring it to our county,” he remarked.
“I can assure you one thing,” he added. “I’m a hard worker. You’ll always know to get in touch with me. I’ll be a phone call away.”
Current Sheriff Roy Wyatt and Circuit Court Clerk Danny Tanner announced their intentions to run for re-election. No Republican stepped forward to run for Trustee, Register of Deeds, Road Supervisor or County Clerk. Mary Ella Teague will run for re-election as County Commissioner in the 3rd District, and Billy Goodman will run for Commissioner in the 7th District.
Chairman Kurt Holbert also announced that Decatur County Republicans will host the first ever Reagan Day Dinner on April 12 at Riverside High School. All four gubernatorial candidates will be in attendance.
The 45 member Republican Executive Committee will meet at the end of this month to choose their nominations.
