Chief McClure: “We’re going to help you”
3/10/10
Several fire officials are addressing concerns brought out at last week’s Scotts Hill Board of Alderman meeting.
Alderman Jeremy Creason said he had received several phone calls regarding the newly elected Fire Chief, Dennis McClure, and it was reported that members of the Scotts Hill Fire Department Station #30 were no longer permitted to respond to emergency calls in Decatur County unless specifically asked to do so by emergency dispatch.
It is so far unclear as to which Decatur County official may have given these orders. According to former Fire Chief Vernice Broadway, Scotts Hill renewed its mutual aid agreement with the county in January, one that has been in place since 1983. Decatur County continues to contribute $2500 per year to the station.
The biggest concern facing residents is the fact that many who live within a few miles of the Scotts Hill city limits may not get timely help in an emergency if they have to wait for Decatur County personnel to arrive.
The closest Decatur County station is in Bath Springs, nearly 7 miles away from Scotts Hill.
Broadway said the department has a call area of about a six mile radius around the station.
“If there is an emergency in our call area, (dispatch) is going to call us,” he said.
“When it comes to helping people in an emergency, we should rule out whose territory we are in,” he added.
Chief McClure wants to assure residents that help will be there when they need it.
“If you need help, we’re going to help you,” he remarked. “Our station is there to help in any way at all, if the need arises.”
“I’m doing my best to do what is required of me,” Chief McClure said. “I’m going to continue to do what I can to protect the people of Scotts Hill, Decatur County, and Henderson County.”
“With all this turmoil, we’re not serving the people the way they should be served,” he added. “No matter how young and innocent or old and wise, we will not pass by you if you need help.”
Decatur County emergency officials contacted by the Chronicle also pledge to continue serving the people.
“We’ve always had a good working relationship with the Scotts Hill Fire Department,” commented Chief Kenny Fox of the Decaturville Station #3 department. “We want to continue to have a good relationship with them.
“We want to be there for the people and help our community,” he added.
“We’re all in this together,” said Broadway. “We just want to protect the community in any way we can.”
