Panthers Edged By Vikings
10/10/06

Riverside traveled to nearby Perry County Friday night and came up short against the Vikings for the first time in a long time. The Panthers, who kept it 7-7 at the half, allowed the game to get away with turnovers and missed blocks. Freshmen Travis Young made the most of it though, carrying the rock for over 100 yds. for the first time this year by a running back.
The Panthers started the game on offense but were quickly turned three and out. The Vikings first drive would end with the Vikings in the negative yardage category. DT Sean Pevahouse made the first stop followed by LB Brian Harralston. DE Dylan McClure sacked the Vikings QB on third and long setting up the punt. The Panthers offense would seem to get on track on their second series utilizing RB Travis Young on the pass and run. The Panthers then got down inside the ten before being held out of the end zone. The field goal would be blocked and the scoring drive stifled.
The defense again played tough and ran the Vikings three and out with Perry County returning the favor on their defensive series, blocking the Riverside punt. The Vikings were unable to capitalize and on 4th and 1...LB Hunter Pearcy would end any threat of a score.
The offense again took over and drove the ball down field where QB Chase Brasher hit wide out Josh Quarles on a 45 yd. bomb to put the Panthers on the board 7-0 with a little over five minutes left in the half. The Viking offense would tie it up after a face mask penalty kept their drive alive, knotting the score at seven apiece. Before the half could end, RHS would throw an interception that would be fumbled and recovered by the Panthers allowing the Panthers to run out the half with the ball.
The second half Perry County would start off with the ball. A fumble by the Vikings looked to fall into Panther hands but an unwaivering official allowed the Vikings to keep the ball. The Panthers would put together another long drive but a questionable penalty followed by another interception on the Vikings behalf would again stop the Panthers.
After each team exchanged series into the fourth quarter Perry County would put together a six play drive that would result in the points needed to win the game 13-7 with 1:49 left in the fourth. The Panthers would not quit and again with just under two minutes left in the game would put together an eleven play drive with QB Brasher and wide out Quarles hooking up several times, but again the Panthers would falter deep in Viking territory ending the game 13-7.
Riverside actually played a better game than many of the past few weeks. The main problem, besides injury, still has to be execution and turnovers. The right plays were called, it’s just that poor execution, turnovers and penalties still continue to haunt the Panthers at key times during the game.
The Panthers have a hard way to go this week as regional opponent and #3 in the state Lewis County (8-0) (6-0) will come to Decatur County for the Panthers’ final home game of the season. Come out and support your Decatur County Riverside Panthers and cheer for the upset in this long time rivalry, Friday at 7 P.M.
