Habitat Requests Lot from Parsons Council

Members on the board of the Decatur County Habitat for Humanity Chapter asked the Parsons City Council Monday night for land that the organization can use to build homes. Habitat is interested in Lot #7, located behind the Municipal building on Georgia Avenue in Parsons.


Trailer Stolen from Martin’s Landing Home

The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of a 16 foot tandem axle Hughes trailer from a home in Bath Springs, Chief Deputy Scott Cagle said Monday.
According to a report from the Sheriff’s Department, the theft occurred sometime between 1 p.m. on April 28 and 6 a.m. on April 29. The trailer was taken from the home of Philip Trenary. Trenary is a resident of Memphis, but maintains a second home at Martin’s Landing, according to the report.
The trailer is reported to be valued at approximately $1195. No arrests have been made in the case, which is still under investigation. Residents who noticed any suspicious activity in the area during the time of the incident are urged to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 852-3703.


Mother’s Day Around the World

The concept of honoring mothers has been around since ancient times. Ancient Greeks honored Rhea, the “mother of the gods,” each spring. A celebration would be held with honey cakes, drinks, and flowers at dawn.
The idea of Mother’s Day in the U.S. was first brought about in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe, who held a Mother’s Day meeting in Boston for several years. In 1907, a woman from Philadelphia named Anna Jarvis campaigned to make Mother’s Day a national celebration.


LET US PRAY…..

The 2008 National Day of Prayer was observed at the Scotts Hill mini park with approximately forty persons in attendance. The service began with the pledge to the flag after which the crowd was inspired and challenged by the thoughts and prayers of several pastors and local citizens. Prayer for many is a mainstay every day, but especially so in these days of war, troubled economy and a breakdown of morality.
Beginning with George Washington, America’s presidents have acknowledged God and relied on their faith and prayers during their tenure. From its birth as a nation, America’s abundance of blessings is attributed to her Godly heritage and the prayers of presidents. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, at the moment of the greatest military invasion in history, D-Day (June 6, 1944) led the nation in praying: “Almighty God, Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our Republic, our religion, and our civilization, and to set free a suffering humanity. Lead them straight and true; give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith.”
